LOVE AFFAIR WITH A SUNSET (continued)
LOVE AFFAIR WITH A SUNSET (continued)
It starts with listening to her client and interpreting their desires. Inspiration for me, is to be in the spirit of my client. What do they love? How do they live? What inspires them? What delights them?
At our first interview, I saw brilliant sunsets in my mind. I felt the exciting vibrant waves and lush sweetness of the sun's warmth. I knew our client had an appreciation for art, color and form. Along with that, my job was to capture their style with its feeling essence. Studying a space is compared to painting a picture in my mind, changing the colors, adding textures and creating a perspective. Once it starts, the painting continues throughout the designing process. Yes, waking up in the middle of the night to sketch an image that came to mind or to jot down the exact calculation for a custom ceiling light fixture.
For instance, in the foyer, where the original stair case was removed, we needed to create an alcove that reflects the essence of what the home is about. We did not have much room for much furniture, (5 ft x 5 ft), and I felt that whatever I came up with was going to be spectacular and a WOW feature.
My eyes went straight to the sloped ceiling—images of blown glass plates cascading down developed in my mind. Blown glass, for me carries the essence of water, opulence, dancing, color and vibrant life; which indeed reflects the story of this home. And home is a reflection of the dwellers. The purple chair brings in modern style and my clients' favorite color.
The living room rug was one of the few items that was brought in from my clients' previous home. The wave pattern in it, dictated the movement for the curved furniture that I selected. The Lucite pieces give a feeling of water, and the transparent feeling water brings. I love working with Lucite and creating custom pieces. In the master suite, we brought in soft velvet fabrics and exquisite furnishings. All the rooms have a view of the water and sunrise. And all the rooms are the view, when standing in them. Our inspiration for this project all started with images of a majestic sunset that we all fell in love with.
